2019 RAM 1500 Oil Type, Capacity & Filter (Full Guide)

The 2019 RAM 1500 is available in 3 engine configurations: 3.6L Pentastar V6 (with eTorque), 5.7L Hemi V8, and the 5.7L V8 (with eTorque).

The 2019 Dodge RAM 1500 model has some special considerations when it comes to oil type, oil capacities and the oil filter type. The RAM 1500 engine needs to have the optimum motor oil to work well and to maximize it’s lifespan. Motor oil protects, cleans, lubricates, and cools the engine, but you must use the correct type.

However, there is a lot of information out there around the best type of engine oil for your 2019 RAM 1500. In this article, I’ve done the research for you on RAM-suitable genuine engine oil and oil filters for the 2019 RAM 1500.

All information in this article was sourced from the owner’s manual for the 2019 RAM 1500.

What Type Of Oil For 2019 RAM 1500?

For the 2019 RAM (1500 model) the 5.7L engines will need SAE 5W-20 engine oil, and the 3.6L engine needs SAE 0W-20 engine oil.

Note that the 5W-20 engine oil is suitable on both 5.7L engine variants – with or without eTorque. The eTorque option is a “mild hybrid” system that reduces the load on an engine to make it more fuel-efficient.

This recommended oil type applies to all the 2019 RAM 1500 trims and body styles: Tradesman, Big Horn, Rebel, Laramie, Lone Star, Laramie Longhorn and Limited (Quad Cab, Crew Cab or Regular Cab).

The engine oil and oil filter needs regular checking and replacing on your RAM to perform in tip-top condition.

The frequency of oil changes and the type of motor oil your RAM engine needs also depends on your driving style, the climate where you live, and even how old your RAM engine is.

2019 RAM 1500 Oil Type and Capacity

Not all engine oils are created equal since there are many different types of motor oils available, including conventional, high-mileage, and synthetic.

You’ll get the best results if you use MOPAR®, Pennzoil®, or Shell Helix® motor oils, according to manufacturer recommendations.

2019 RAM 1500 3.6L Oil Type and Capacity

The 3.6L V6 RAM 1500 Engine will require 5 quarts (4.7 liters) of synthetic SAE 0W-20 engine oil.

See below for the manufacturer’s recommended engine oil which improves low-temperature starting and vehicle fuel economy.

There are various varieties of motor oil available, including conventional or petroleum-based, full synthetic, synthetic blend, and high-mileage, but for a RAM 1500, the manufacturer suggests to use a synthetic oil type since its ideal for heavy-duty use and it provides improved sludge and engine wear protection. It is also less sensitive to temperature variations.

The recommended 0W-20 engine oil is low-viscosity (or thin) motor oil. This will allow your car to perform optimally in cold temperatures and lets the engine oil flow without causing too much friction in your engine.

Keep in mind that, while the table above is specific, it is not limiting; for example, you could swap to a slightly higher or lower viscosity engine oil. However, don’t switch from one oil type to another without first consulting a specialist.

Does My 2019 RAM 1500 Need an Oil Change?

Your truck will be the first to let you know if there is a problem with your oil. There may be an engine oil change indicator light in your RAM. The instrument cluster display will show the message “Oil Change Required” or “Oil Change”. This is part of the vehicle’s automatic oil change indicator system. When you see this light you should service your engine oil as soon as possible, within the next 500 miles (805 km).

If your RAM is driven primarily at very low engine RPMs, or if it is driven in a dusty and off-road conditions, the engine oil should be changed after 4,000 miles (6,500 km) or 350 hours of engine operation.

According to the manufacturer, you should never let the oil change intervals exceed 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first, so make sure to carry out your oil service in time!

Check for the following warning lights on your 2019 RAM 1500 instrument cluster, behind your steering wheel:

Oil Pressure Warning Light – illuminates to indicate low engine oil pressure.

Oil Temperature Warning Light – illuminates to indicate the engine oil temperature is too high.

Note that during the first few thousand miles (kilometers) of driving a new RAM, the new engine may use some oil, so your oil level might drop. This shouldn’t be seen as an issue but rather as a typical aspect of the break-in of the truck as it drives.
